Add Save File Converter to the front page?

Hey, I was wondering if it made sense to link to the github for Save File Converter: https://github.com/euan-forrester/save-file-converter under "Other Guides" on the main page? It seems in line with the links to the Open Source Cartridge Reader and BlueRetro githubs.

It's an open source online tool that converts legacy save file formats like DexDrive, GameShark, or Wii Virtual Console to more modern formats that can be written to original hardware or used in modern emulators. The github contains documentation on and implementation of all of the supported formats, and the readme has lots of links to further information.

Or maybe a link somewhere to the main save file converter site? https://savefileconverter.com/ -- User:Euan

Great idea! I wasn't aware of this tool. I've added it next to BlueRetro and OSCR. Thanks!! Derf (talk) 04:49, 29 April 2022 (UTC)
Awesome! Thank you! -- User:Euan

AV Equipment page

Hey there! Can we get a new category on the main page for AV equipment? I'm ready to contribute a bunch of stuff for laserdisc players, and I'm sure there are other things out there for AVRs, VHS, VHD, etc... Once we have a good section for that, I will start documenting all the stuff I have for laserdisc mods! :) -- User:That1crzywhtguy

Hey! I think we want to keep the scope at the "devices used to play games" level for now (well, yes, there are a handful of VHS games but). So laserdiscs would be fine since there's lots of laserdisc games and add-ons like the Genesis LD pack and whatnot. Would you want to go ahead and flesh out a landing page for Laserdisc? I can make a namespace for it soon. Derf (talk) 22:34, 3 May 2022 (UTC)

I was also thinking of things like receivers for gaming setups, and compiling magnetically shielded speakers that are safe for use near CRTs, figuring that would go under AV. Sorry if I was incorrect in thinking the scope of the wiki would cover these things if that's not the intention. -- User:That1crzywhtguy

Ah! Yes, if used for gaming it'd definitely be welcome. A list of magnetically shielded speakers is something that's been kicked around and would be a great addition. It's also be interesting to actually quantify exactly how much magnetic flux it takes to affect CRT screens - something that can be measured using any smart phone and a magnetic sensor (Gaussmeter) app. Derf (talk) 16:00, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

Okay....This is fascinating! :) This would be a cool bit of knowledge to crowdsource. Anyhow, do you think an AV section makes sense now? Like an AV Section on the main page with the CRT wiki button (AV wiki?), and within that, AV Receivers (maybe lists of known good receivers with component, s-video and good units that support various Dolby encoding and a list of games that support dolby? Many on SNES etc...), Speakers, Laserdisc (although I imagine the Laseractive and Laserdisc arcade cabs should be crosslisted in gaming/arcade too?), maybe once we have that AV section, someone could include VHS game stuff if it comes up, though this seems far less interesting to me personally, and I suspect to most?

I'm here to help out with this section for sure, and I'm sure many others will follow suit!

What are your thoughts on this and how to organize it? That1crzywhtguy (talk) 18:05, 4 May 2022 (UTC)

I think I may add a "Other Devices" table on the front page with something like:
  • Upscalers (which would be a page with different devices such as the AV:RetroTINK-5X Pro)
  • Switches (Extron Crosspoints, Hydra, gscartsw, etc)
  • LaserDisc (LaserActive, cabs, other units?)
  • Audio Devices (shielded speaker list, Dolby list, receivers)

It's something I've been thinking about since that RetroTink page needs a home. Just been busy :) I'm actually going to be pretty dang busy through next Wednesday, so I wouldn't count on it all being put in place until next week - but you can always make pages now and we'll get it put into the right place if you're itching to dump your brain now! Got a section started here, still WIP: https://consolemods.org/wiki/AV:Audio_Video_Wiki Derf (talk) 03:06, 28 May 2022 (UTC)

Why is Special:Version restricted to administrators?

First off, apologies if this is the wrong (on-wiki) place for this discussion. If so, I'd appreciate a pointer towards the correct page(s). :-)

Now, the MediaWiki core special page Special:Version lists information about this wiki and its software, like MediaWiki version, installed software libraries, installed MediaWiki extensions and skins and more. By default it is viewable by everyone, but on the ConsoleMods Wiki it's restricted to administrators. Why? It seems awfully silly, given that 1) it sounds awfully lot like "security through obscurity and 2) the information can still be retrieved by anyone (yes, even anons (!)) via the API entry point, api.php. --Jack Phoenix (talk) 18:49, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

  • Generally, people reach out via our Discord or via my user talk page, but it wouldn't be the worst idea for me to move the todo list to a separate talk page.
  • To answer your question, it is indeed security through obscurity for the event that I might not have updated MediaWiki core in a timely manner. Generally, I update it very quickly, but hiding the Versions page may thwart the 1 in 10 attackers who might be too naive or not care enough to run the API call in the unlikely scenario that a major vulnerability is found and I haven't kept on top of things. In my opinion, it's better to have that miniscule bit of deterrence or extra hoop that an attacker must jump through. Derf (talk) 22:58, 12 December 2023 (UTC)

Translation check

Hi, yes, checking over auto-translations would be something I'd be interested in doing. Al Balog (talk) 04:45, 21 January 2024 (UTC)

User:Al Balog Awesome! I still need to explore how it all works and outline the process, but I'll reach out when the time comes. Alternatively, there's a channel specifically for it in our Discord if you want to join. Derf (talk) 06:46, 21 January 2024 (UTC)
