1. Recently, a crystal Xbox with a MSN logo silkscreened (that’s not silk screen from what I can tell) on it was found. Do you have any information on this? Are there any other similar one-off consoles like this you know? I know there's an "Ed Fries edition" Xbox that was made especially for him; were you involved in the making of it? MSN Xbox: https://imgur.com/a/1jYxo This one is odd. I’ll have to grock on this for a while. We might have made something special for MSN, or as a test, but I don’t know how that would have been engraved in the plastics since we didn’t have a tool with the MSN engraved in it. Ed Fries edition Xbox: https://imgur.com/gallery/aIqCY This looks a special one off someone made. I likely may have made it for someone (the white chassis), but not the special jewel or lettering, but don’t recall specifically. I have more info on the photos... I would consider Panzer Dragoon, Japan Dark Crystal (Smoke), and Mountain Dew my favorites. I wish I made myself the red or glow in the dark. 2. Were there ever DVT5 or DVT6 consoles? Don’t know (I don’t remember all these configs and code names) 3. How many 50 Cent consoles were made? I had heard that there were two variants; a unique one made for an Australian TV channel and at least four units with a black swirl design on them. Is there anything you can tell me about these? I imagine they were probably memorable if they were a pain to make like the Panzer consoles. These weren’t made by MS. They (marketing) just took some consoles, shipped them off to another company that painted them up for the promotion. There are other examples of this (the one that was for the PETA auction, the gold one (Tony Hawk?), I’ll have to go back and look at wiki). I made all of the white, clear, blue, clear green (Halo/employee), orange, and mountain dew/hulk units. I think there might be 1 or 2 other versions. ... we never made a painted SE that was sent out. We made a couple gold ones for awards for execs internally. Generally any of the painted ones looked like shit and had to be hand made 1 at a time, so we never really did this except for special occasions. 4. Was the Hello Kitty one from Microsoft? I am suspecting so since it has an accompanying box, but who knows. It may have just been a regular crystal Xbox to you. Regular crystal console, japan team applied the sticker and printed the box. 5. Do you know how many EA Special Edition consoles may have been made? Were there similar consoles made for any other partners, like NVIDIA? Hmmm, I probably gave some spare white consoles to marketing and they made these up. I would guess around 5-10. 6. You mentioned being involved with the Hulk/Mountain Dew editions. Were the Hulk ones just leftover Mountain Dew consoles that got repurposed with a new jewel slapped on? Any idea how many Hulk ones were made? See in the attached. Yes, these were nearly the same campaign and pretty much made at the same time, just a different jewel. I think they were just the spares we had left over. 7. Is there some story about the Southeast Asian Halo 2 console? It appears to just be a translucent green console with a Halo 2 sticker slapped on it. I assume it was probably just an unofficial thing started by a store chain, but maybe there's something more to it. Since it was probably just a regular green console, I imagine you probably don't have production numbers on it either. Well, the console would have been a regular console, but I don’t know who could have put that sticker on. Most likely someone from our distribution channel. I don’t think there is a notable story here. 8. Have you ever modded an Xbox or any other console? I'm just curious what your opinion on it is (feel free to skip this question, or any really). No, I am not a modder. But I really dig all of the custom cases and alternations people have made for their consoles, it shows a passion folks had for their console as a gaming rig and I am all for that. The fans showing their passion and expression through modding is awesome, I would have to say nearly every person I knew at Xbox was generally supportive (maybe not the right word here) or at least thought positively (in a way) of people who expressed their passion for the Xbox and gaming through console modding, at least they didn’t look down on it unless people were stealing IP and jailbreaking games. I don’t want to get into a legal conversation (and people should always follow the law around copyrights, IP and licensing), but I was always amazed (positively) with all of the additional hacking, emulating and putting games libraries on the HDD type of stuff – just all of the effort that people did to make their console “better” or customized in some way. You can sort of see the corporate response, recognition, encouragement, and acceptance of that in the 360. We specifically made the face plate removable so we could just do custom face plates for special editions and make my life easier. They also continued to make more elaborate special editions long after I was gone like R2D2 version, controllers with way more elaborate graphics (halo controllers) and the such. Going back to OG Xbox, we also really tried to make the Xbox jewel light up, but we just never made it that far or had enough time to find a solution that was easy to engineer and cost effective. Lots of modders did this in a variety of ways, some of which we spent a little effort on, but we just never had the time to go that far.
