The FunnyPlaying GBC battery charging mod is a mod that replaces the need for disposable batteries with a 1800 mAH rechargeable battery. After performing the mod, you will be able to charge the battery using the stock power port and a USB-to-barrel-jack cable that is provided with the mod kit.
Warnings
Do not play the system while charging as you will risk overcharging the battery and damaging it. The system MUST be powered off when you charge the battery. |
- You will either need a case that is designed to accommodate this battery or you will need to cut out the plastic divider that sits between the two AA batteries in your stock shell to be able to fit the battery. Ensure that you smooth down any cut plastic so it does not damage the battery.
- The PCB you install into the Game Boy Color will sit in the same spot that a CleanPower mod board would sit, so these two mods are considered incompatible unless you DIY a solution to have both installed.
Installation
A video showing installation of this mod is available on the Hand Held Legend YouTube channel.
- Place the battery mod PCB in place.
- Solder the two points on the PCB marked
GND
, and the one point markedVoltage detection
in the picture below. - Desolder fuse F1. You may wish to keep it attached to one solder point as a form of storage in case you ever want to revert this mod.
- Solder one of the provided wires to the left pad of F1 and the other end to the
Out
pad on the PCB. - Solder the other provided wire to the right pad of F1 and the other end to the
In
pad on the PCB. - Insert the battery into the plastic shell, with the attached wire run through the hole in the top portion of the battery area.
- Place the battery wire onto the connector on the PCB and press down gently to snap it into place.
- If you are using the original case, you will need to remove the battery terminal connected to the back shell by poking a pointy object into the backside of the terminal through a small hole on the inside of the shell. If you wish, you can also desolder and remove the other battery terminal from the motherboard.
- Reassemble your console and test. The battery likely will not have come fully charged, so you may need to power the system off and charge it for a while first.
