The Japanese version of the NES, the Famicom, featured an audio input on its cartridge port. This allowed for games to expand upon the Famicom's audio capabilities, and was a feature used by a number of games as well as the Famicom Disk System add-on. However, no NES games ever provided additional audio as its cartridge port did not have a provision for external audio input; the original front loading NES had an audio input on its bottom expansion port, but this was never used.
