The OpenXHD Project is a community driven digital HDMI solution for Original Xbox consoles, based on the work by Ryzee119 and his XboxHDMI prototype boards and firmware.

Goals of the Project

These are the aims and goals of the OpenXHD project:

  • all hardware and software (firmware) must be available as Open Source to allow anyone the freedom to create their own OpenXHD without being tied to any single store, modder or individual
  • all components must be easy to acquire from multiple sources (no EOL/not recommended for new design components)
  • all hardware and components must be available to be sourced at a reasonable price (focus on finding low cost components without sacrificing quality)
  • all components must be as easy to solder to the board as possible
  • all components must fit on one side of of the PCB to keep board house manufacturing costs low
  • must be compatible with flex cables from existing all digital Xbox HDMI mods to allow console owners the freedom to change between devices easily
  • any additional features be made optional to prevent unnecessary costs
  • provide room for future expansion without increasing cost
  • hardware built to be incompatible with existing closed source or proprietary all digital Xbox HDMI mods

History

Following the above aims in early 2024 several critical component changes were made from Ryzee119's original design including:

  • changing the microcontroller to an easier to solder, lower cost, and newer LQFP32 STM32G030 with more IO and flash storage
  • changing the TVS diodes to an easier to solder SOT-23-5 package
  • changing the flex connector to a larger and more durable 24 pin model
  • changing the voltage regulator to a newer, more robust device
  • changing most of the passive components to more closely fit recommended design specifications of active components, and to aid in ease of assembly

Current Progress

Regular updates to this project are shared on the Xbox-Scene discord in the oxhd-public-dev channel.

OpenXHD main board is feature complete, there may be more revisions to shift components around for fitment.

OpenXHD flex cable for 1.0-1.4 consoles is in testing.

OpenXHD flex cable for 1.6 design is in progress.
