Red Screen of Death (RSOD)
A variety of error screens can present themselves when using your PS2.
Symptom:
- Console begins playing the cold boot intro, but after zooming in, a red foggy screen with cubes floating around is shown with message stating:
Please insert a PlayStation® or PlayStation®2 format disc.
Cause:
- An unknown format or different region disc is inserted.
Disc could not be read
Symptom:
- Console plays the cold boot intro and sends you to the on-screen display with the "Browser" and "System Configuration" options. Pressing will bring you to the memory card manager screen with the text:
The disc could not be read.
- Subsequent attempts to start the disc will show the same message.
Cause:
- The disc in the drive is badly scratched.
- The disc drive is failing and may need cleaning or replacement.
DVD Player is not set up
Symptom:
- The memory card manager screen opens with the text:
DVD Player is not set up.
- Subsequent attempts to start the disc will show the same message.
Cause:
- You are using FMCB 1.95. Try another version of FMCB.
- Attempting to play a burned game from disc that is not ESR patched - or you did not run ESR on the PS2 itself.
Freeze at PlayStation logo when loading PlayStation game
Symptom:
- The console freezes at PlayStation logo when loading PlayStation game.
Cause:
- The disc you are using is damaged.
- The disc drive is failing and may need cleaning or replacement.
- Incorrect settings were used within GSM.
