This process is used to add games to your console that the console is already licensed to use (e.g. previously installed but deleted) or to add new Xbox One/Series, Xbox 360, or original Xbox games to your console that you have a disc for.

Exclamation-triangle-fill.svgThis process involves taking your Xbox online for a minute in order to recognize newly added games. There is a chance that you can accidentally update or can become "update flagged", meaning that you can no longer use your Xbox until you update.

Downloading New Games

  1. Plug a USB storage device into your Xbox and allow it to format the drive.
  2. Download Xbox Download, extract it, and run it.
  3. Locate the item you wish to install on your Xbox in the Xbox Store on Xbox.com and copy the link.
  4. Click the Store tab and paste the Xbox store link in the "URL/ProductID" field, choose the country, and click Submit. It should find and populate data in the rest of the fields.
  5. Check that there is a package listed in the bottom list for Xbox One. Right-click and choose "Copy Link" and paste it in a browser to download the game.
  6. In Xbox Download, click the HDD tab and verify that your USB storage device is listed. If not, click Scan, and it should appear.
  7. Click the "Enable PC Mode" button.
  8. Open Windows Explorer and find your USB storage device. Copy the package you had downloaded to the the root of the drive.
  9. In Xbox Download, click the Browse button next to the "Local file" field, navigate to the USB storage device, and choose the package you downloaded.
  10. Click the "Rename Local file" link next to the "Content ID" field. This will rename the file.
  11. Click the "Enable Xbox Mode" button.
  12. Plug your USB storage device into your Xbox. It will NOT recognize the packages you added. This is expected behavior.

Refreshing XVC Files

Read through the following steps ahead of executing them, so that you are familiar with them. Do NOT rush the steps, as you can possibly choose the update button if you are not careful.

Exclamation-circle-fill.svgIf you have the ability (e.g. via PiHole), block the Xbox udpate servers in your network DNS listed on this GitHub.

  1. On your Xbox, navigate to Settings > System > Updates, and uncheck both boxes for "Keep my console up to date" and "Keep my games & apps up to date".
  2. Navigate to Settings > Network Settings, and set your DNS to "127.0.0.1", if not already done.
  3. Connect your Xbox to your wifi or ethernet.
  4. Navigate to Settings > Network Settings, and set your DNS to Auto. Upon pressing Back, it will do a connection test and pop up an update prompt. Give it 5 seconds, then choose "Skip & stay offline".
  5. Navigate to Settings > Network Settings, and set your DNS to "127.0.0.1".
  6. Reboot your Xbox or disconnect it from your network to sever any open network traffic sessions.
  7. Open your "Games and Apps" and the games should now appear. You may need to copy them to your internal hard drive before use.
    • If you have a license on the console, you should be able to launch it.
    • If you have a disc for it, you should be able to insert it and launch it.
