To do:

  • Speaker replacement tutorial on speaker page

Below is a list of a lot of mods or replacement parts for the Game Boy DMG, Pocket, Color, and Advance. Note that this list is not complete by any means, since it is a notepad file I have for my personal part list whenever I want to mod a Game Boy. This is meant to serve as a starting point. SP is not included cause I personally don't care for the SP, however I do include a small section at the bottom for an aluminum shell mod for it. Those who are more experienced can expand upon that.

Most of these parts are either from FunnyPlaying, RetroModding, Natalie the Nerd, or unbranded. There is a modder that goes by RetroSix but they are known to sell faulty boards and steal work (more information available here). Myself in particular has purchased a faulty USB-C CleanJuice battery mod from them where it was draining the battery while the Game Boy was powered off all the way to where it was completely empty, which is a big no-no for lithium batteries. However at the same time, as a wiki I do feel it is important to be informative as possible by including everything, since they do have more than a couple battery mods that no one else is doing. The one thing about battery mods though for all Game Boys is that most of them use a board called the TP4056. This board does not support playing and charging simultaneously due to a lack of load switching, it generates more heat than what should be considered safe, and does not have proper protections in place for shutting off the battery when it overheats.

For screen mods Makho has written their own detailed guide here talking about each third party screen for all handhelds, with a comparison table as well for each. A lot of them even have hour long (or more) install videos that act on their own review. This is an incredible resource with a ton of time spent into it that I'm not sure how to incorporate. Rewriting the entire thing here would be pointless. If possible we could seek permission from Makho to just incorporate this entire page on the wiki.
