The Japanese and American GameCubes, being fundamentally the same thing, can be converted between each other by moving a resistor on the motherboard.
Furthermore, as the purpose of the resistor is to pull either up or down a signal line, an external switch can be fitted to allow for changing the region on demand: this is in fact a factory-fitted feature on development models.[1]
