The PS1 is not capable of outputting true widescreen resolutions, as the highest it can display is 640x480 pixels.

Two types of widescreen modes are employed:

  • Anamorphic: The 16:9 image is squished into a 4:3 frame. The TV then can stretch the image to fill the full 16:9 screen. Generally, this causes 2D content to appear stretched horizontally.
  • Letterbox: The 16:9 image is displayed inside of the 4:3 frame, adding a black bar at the top and bottom of the screen. You can then zoom in your TV to fill the screen. This results in worse quality than anamorphic.

The "cropped" notation indicates that part of the image is cut off, which can be present in either widescreen mode.

There are many community-made widescreen patches available. They are occasionally compiled as single download as the "PSOne Widescreen Archive" on this thread post (File:PSOne Widescreen Archive.rar) though an updated copy may be posted later in the thread. A tutorial for making these patches can be found on this thread.
