Dreamcast:List of VGA Games and Patches

From ConsoleMods Wiki
Jump to navigation Jump to search

The vast majority of the Dreamcast game library has either native VGA (i.e., 480p) support, or can be forced to run in VGA mode. Several games which cannot be forced have had VGA patches developed for them. Note that some of the below patches will force VGA mode, thus rendering them incompatible with CRTs that only support interlaced video content (despite the video cable type being used). If you plan to use the same set of games on multiple displays (i.e., progressive scan and interlaced), it's advised that you maintain both the original and the VGA-patched version in your set.

Forcing VGA Mode

Forcing a game to boot in VGA mode is achievable in several ways, depending on hardware configuration.

  • ODE
    • GDEMU - Set "Force VGA" to "On" in GDMenu settings.
    • MODE - Set "Auto VGA Patch" to "On" in the settings menu.
  • Original Disc
    • Use a boot disc like "Code Breaker" to force a game to boot in VGA mode.
  • Emulator
    • By default, most Dreamcast emulators are set to VGA mode, which also serves to force boot where available.

Additionally, disc images can be rebuilt to turn on the VGA support flag inside the IP.BIN file. Patching IP.BIN can be achieved through manual modification via hex editor, or with a utility like IP.BIN 4 WIN.

VGA Patches

The following list represents games which had no native VGA support across all three territories (PAL, NTSC-U, NTSC-J) until a patch was developed. Note that additional VGA patches have been developed outside of those listed below (namely for PAL titles), but are considered redundant as their NTSC-U equivalents already have native VGA support.

The below patches were developed by japanese-cake, and are available for download from his repository (mirror), with the exception of "Es" provided as DCP patches.

  • Dino Crisis (PAL, additionally patched with 60hz support)
  • Es (NTSC-J, download DCP [Disc 1, Disc 2, Disc 3] patch for use with Universal Dreamcast Patcher)
  • L.O.L. - Lack of Love (NTSC-J, note that VGA patch was also used for the English translation patch)
  • MTV Sports - Skateboarding (PAL, additionally patched with 60hz support)
  • WWF Attitude (PAL, additionally patched with 60hz support)

The below patches were developed by TapamN on the Dreamcast-Talk forums.

The below patches are of unknown origin.
