Taking advantage of the Yellow Book (data CD) standard allowing a disc to contain a mixture of audio and data tracks, a somewhat popular option for PS1 game developers to implement background music was to store it as standard CD-DA audio tracks: while, if contrasted with synthesized music or CD-ROM/XA interleaved streaming, it uses large amounts of disc space and prevents the simultaneous use of the drive for other purposes, it provides full CD quality soundtracks and is completely hardware accelerated, freeing up CPU usage for other purposes.

As the ISO9660 file system allows referencing sectors outside the data track, in some titles (e.g. Hot Wheels Turbo Racing) these audio tracks may even appear as crosslinked files!

Being standard audio CD tracks, they can be played or ripped with any appropriate CD-DA equipment (with the caveat, common to any Mixed Mode CD, that the first track contains game data which may produce static if played on a device that doesn't support the "data track" flag.) This includes the PlayStation's CD Player feature, by entering it before inserting the disc to prevent it from autobooting.

Some titles even contain "hidden" tracks featuring audio not otherwise accessible through normal game playback methods.

The following PS1 games feature CDDA audio tracks:
