Nerd, MediaWiki developer (since 2008) and Nintendo enthusiast since forever.
My first console was the NES, but these days I own most of Nintendo's home consoles (except the Wii U), even some NTSC ones (which, as of December 2023, are in need of recapping: Famicom and the Super Famicom).
I'm very much a beginner when it comes to hardware mods and I wouldn't consider myself too experienced with software mods either, even if somehow I managed to jailbreak my Nintendo 3DS back in 2017. :-)
Hardware mods (or "mods") on my to-do list
- Battery holder installation for a bunch of Game Boy cartridges
- ...because why bother breaking out a soldering iron to just change a single coin cell battery? Let's do what Nintendidn't.
- Famicom repairs (recapping at least)
- It was getting super hot very quickly, which to me indicates a short somewhere. Maybe the 7805 voltage regulator and/or some/many/most/all capacitors are bad? Need to change these and see if I can get it to show an image. And the AV mod (see below) oughta be doable at the same time as well, it's simple enough.
- Famicom AV mod
- I don't necessarily have much qualms when it comes to the RF signal image quality (although it goes without saying that obviouly it is inferior to pretty much any and all alternatives) but I do worry about it not actually working with my LCD TV.
- Super Famicom recapping
- At least C63 and C64 have leaked. Others look visually OK but should be considered dodgy regardless.
- Super Famicom 62-pin connector swapping
- Pin 32 is super corroded, not sure if it's making a contact anymore? Even if it were, it's bad enough to warrant a swap. Pin 33 is also not great.
- Super Famicom 7805 voltage regulator swap
- PAL spare SNES assorted fixing
- I never got this one working, maybe it needs recapping (+new 7805)? And/or reflowing the chips. Like the SFC, it does power on but won't display a signal.
