The Atari Video Computer System (VCS) — later rebranded as the Atari 2600 in 1982 — is an 8-bit console from the second generation of video game consoles. The console was launched in North America in September of 1977 followed by Europe (1978) and Japan (October 1983 as the Atari 2800). Six main model revisions were released, mainly to cut production costs.
