There are a few ways to update your Vita / PSTV.
If you have non-retail hardware, go to Vita:Manually Updating a Development Kit.
Over the Internet
To perform an update with the internet, open the Settings app, scroll down to System Update
, and select Update Using Wi-Fi
. Your Vita automatically checks over the internet whether you have the latest version of the system software. If there is an update file for a later version, it is downloaded to the system. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.
Once finished, you can continue to Vita:Getting Started if you wish to install custom firmware.
Over USB (PSTV)
- On the USB flash drive, create folders for saving the update file. Using a computer, create a folder named "PSVITA" on the USB flash drive. Inside that folder, create another folder named "UPDATE".
- Download the update file, and save it in the "UPDATE" folder you created in step 1. Save the file with the file name "PSVUPDAT.PUP".
- If you need a place to download PS Vita firmware update files, you can do so from the following sites:
- Turn off the power of your PS TV system completely.
- Press and hold the Power button on your PS TV system for at least seven seconds to turn on the power so the system starts in safe mode.
- Connect an OEM controller using a USB cable, and then press then PS button.
- Select Update System Software > Update from USB Storage Device.
- Connect the USB flash drive that the update file is saved on to your PS TV system, and except the on-screen prompts.
- Once finished, you can continue to Vita:Getting Started if you wish to install custom firmware.

This method requires a PlayStation 3 on firmware 4.00 or newer.
- Connect your PS Vita system to the PS3 system using a USB cable. All open applications must be closed, and User must be selected.
- On your Vita system, select Settings > Start > System Update > Update by Connecting to a PS3 system. Your PS Vita automatically checks over the Internet whether you have the latest version of the system software.
- If there is an update file for a later version, it is downloaded to the system.
- Follow the screen instructions to complete the update.
- Once finished, you can continue to Vita:Getting Started if you wish to install custom firmware.
