UMD Drives are prone to failure, and PSN connectivity on the PSP is now near non-existent. As a result, it may be useful to create backups of your physical or digital games.

Creating Backups of UMD Games

Backing up UMD games digitally requires your PSP to have custom firmware installed. This process can be followed on the PSP 1000, 2000, 3000 or E1000 (Street). Backing up UMDs cannot be done on the PSP N1000 (Go) due to its lack of a UMD Drive.

Ripping UMDs via USB

  1. Open the VSH menu of your custom firmware by pressing SELECT.
  2. Navigate to "USB Device" and use left or right on the DPAD to change it from "Memory Stick" to "UMD Disc".
  3. Connect your PSP to a PC via USB and enter USB mode.
  4. Navigate to the PSP drive on your PC and copy "UMD9660.ISO" to a location on your PC. This process may take a few minutes to complete.
  5. The copied ISO file can be renamed to, for example, "GameName.iso".

Ripping UMDs via PSPFiler

  1. Insert your UMD into the PSP and launch PSPFiler.
  2. Press the Triangle button and then press R to select "UMD ripping".
  3. You will be prompted to name the ISO file. By default, the disc ID will be used for the name. You can change it or leave it as it is.
  4. Press START and the process will begin. This may take a few minutes to complete. When finished, press X to exit the prompt and then exit PSPFiler.
  5. The ripped ISO will be located in the "ISO" folder on the root of your Memory Stick. This can be copied to your PC via USB or launched on the PSP by selecting the game icon from Game > Memory Stick on the XMB.

Creating Backups of PSN Games and DLC

Backing up the EBOOT and license files

If you wish to have a user friendly program for managing your digital PSP content, you can instead use the offical Media Go application rather than maually coping the folders with standard file explorers.

  1. Connect your PSP to a PC via USB.
  2. Navigate to the ms0:/PSP/GAME/ folder on your Memory Stick (or Internal Storage [ef0:/] if using a PSP Go).
  3. The folder for your PSN content will be named with the game ID (e.g. "ULUS10025"). Inside this folder will be a file named "EBOOT.PBP", and in some cases, a file called "DOCUMENT.DAT". Copy this folder to a location on your PC.
  4. Go up a folder, then back up the LICENSE folder to a save location on your PC. If the licenses for your PSN content in this folder don't exist or are invalid, the content will not be usable unless you use a DRM bypass plugin like npdrm_free.

Creating an ISO from a PSN Game Backup

You may want to convert your PSN game backup to an ISO for use on a PS3 or for applying patches.

  1. Download npdpc.
  2. Drag the EBOOT.PBP of your PSN game onto "npdpc.exe".
  3. The created ISO will be placed next to your EBOOT.PBP, named according to the game's ID (e.g. ULUS-10025.ISO).

Getting the PKG Entitlement Links from a PSN account

With PSDLE, it is entirely possible to get the PKG download links directly from your account without even needing a modified console.

  1. Download the PSDLE browser extention from the extention stores for Firefox or Chromium based browsers.
  2. Sign into your PSN account on PlayStation.com and navigate to this link. PSDLE will change the page to show a detailed view of all of your PlayStation purchases, including options for platform categorization. You can hide all of the platforms except PSP, since that is what this guide is focusing on.
  3. Click the Export View button on the top of the page. On the pop up window, click Import.
  4. Paste the following into the text field pop up as one line:
    • [{"property":"platform","title":"Platform"},{"property":"name","title":"Name"},{"property":"pkg","title":"PKG direct link"},{"property":"id","title":"Content ID"},{"property":"size","title":"File Size"},{"property":"baseGame","title":"Alternate Name"},{"property":"productID","title":"Product ID"},{"property":"url","title":"Store URL"}]
  5. Once these properties have been pasted, you can export the list of your purchases as a CSV or JSON file. From there, you can see the PKG links from Sony's CDN in that exported database file and can be easily downloaded with a computer.
