The Sega Game Gear is an 8-bit handheld console from the fourth generation of video game consoles. The system launched in Japan on October 6, 1990, followed by North America and Europe during 1991. The Game Gear featured similar hardware to the Master System, but had a much larger color palette of 4,096 colors and offered true stereo sound. The system could be powered by an AC adapter or run for three to five hours on six AA batteries — a much shorter amount of time than the Game Boy's 30 hours on 4 AA batteries.
