The Sony PlayStation 3 is a console from the seventh generation of video game consoles. The console was launched in Japan on November 11th, 2006 followed by North America (November 17th, 2006) and Europe (March 23th, 2007). Three major models were released in it's lifespan: the "fat", "slim", and "super slim". The launch models were equipped with full PS2 and PS1 backwards compatibility via CPU/GPU chips onboard - with PS2 disc support later being removed from the hardware. Firmware version 3.21 removed the ability to run the Linux operating system, leading to lawsuits and increased pressure on the community to exploit the console to restore Linux. The PS3 was also the first console that supported Blu-ray discs for games and movies.

The PS3 Developer Wiki is a great supplemental development-focused resource to this wiki.
